The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence

Nadal practising with Denis Shapovalov at Indian Wells 2020

I love the expression from Nadal when he sinks the forehand into the net. It gives us a very important insight into what makes him an enduring champion. Even with 19 grand slams to this name, a missed routine forehand during practice frustrates him greatly.

This is what all enduringly great performers have in common — it is not so much the winning and losing, it’s the quest for perfection. As much as he dislikes losing games, he perhaps hates a poorly executed shot even more. This is the hallmark of all great champions — more than trying to beat their opponent, they are trying to be the very best that they can be. It is a relentless pursuit of excellence.
